3888 SKY Early Admission Passers Withdraw Registration... "Impact of Medical School Expansion"

204 Early Admission Successful Applicants at Seoul National University Withdraw Registration... All Medical School Students Enroll

Among the early admission successful candidates for the 2025 academic year at Seoul National University (SNU), a total of 204 students have declined their enrollment. Among the successful candidates of the so-called 'SKY' universities?Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University?a total of 3,888 students have declined enrollment.

According to Jongno Academy on the 25th, as of the previous day when SNU announced the second final additional successful candidates, it was found that 204 students had not enrolled cumulatively.

The number of early admission enrollment declinations is 175 in the natural sciences, 28 in the humanities, and 1 in arts and physical education.

SNU also announced the final additional successful candidates up to the second round last year. At that time, 228 students declined enrollment.

Looking at the enrollment declination rates by major, in the natural sciences, the Department of Applied Biological Chemistry had 57.7%, the Department of Forest Sciences 42.3%, and the Department of Food and Nutrition 38.9%. In the humanities, the Department of English Language and Literature had 22.2%, and the Consumer Studies major had 20.0%.

Additionally, the School of Dentistry had a 32.0% declination rate, the Pharmacy division 30.2%, and the Pre-Veterinary Medicine program 12.0%. There were no enrollment declinations in the College of Medicine.

Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongno Academy, stated, "The decrease in enrollment declinations in SNU's natural sciences compared to last year appears to be due to the expansion of the medical school quota, which led top-tier students to increase their applications to medical schools rather than SNU's natural sciences."

The number of early admission applicants to medical schools nationwide for the 2025 academic year was 72,351, a 26.5% increase from the previous year. However, the number of early admission applicants to SNU's natural sciences was 12,536, showing only a 5.8% increase from the previous year.

Among Yonsei University and Korea University, Yonsei University showed a higher enrollment declination rate. As of the previous day, the enrollment declination rate among Yonsei University's early admission successful candidates was 84.9%, significantly surpassing last year's 59.8% at the same time. In the humanities, it rose from 50.3% last year to 82.2% this year, and in the natural sciences, from 72.1% to 90.4%.

Korea University had a 68.6% declination rate, down from 72.8% at the same time last year. This was largely due to the natural sciences rate dropping from 79.0% last year to 67.9%. In the humanities, it increased from 68.8% to 71.8%.

Jongno Academy estimated that a significant number of natural sciences successful candidates at Yonsei University had overlapping admissions to medical schools. The expansion of medical school quotas influenced this. Furthermore, the increase in enrollment declination rates in the humanities at Yonsei University and Korea University was analyzed to be due to cross-applications by science students, resulting in overlapping admissions between humanities and sciences, leading to more humanities enrollment declinations, as well as the expansion of the non-major admission track.

Yonsei University and Korea University are scheduled to announce the final additional successful candidates for early admission around the afternoon of the 26th. If there are further no-shows at that time, additional successful candidates will be notified by phone. Once the early admission announcements are completely finalized on the 27th, the decision on whether to carry over spots to the regular admission will be made. By the 30th, before the start of regular admissions, the final number of regular admission spots will be confirmed, reflecting the unfilled early admission spots.

Last year, the number of spots carried over to regular admissions due to unfilled early admission spots at Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University was 337, accounting for 4.9% of the total early admission quota.
