The Only Korean University Certified 5-Star (Highest Rating)
Busan Dongmyeong University received the highest rating of 5 Stars in the QS Stars University Ratings announced on the 19th by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), a world-renowned university evaluation organization based in the UK.
As of 2024, over 700 universities from more than 70 countries worldwide were evaluated by QS Stars, and among the 374 universities that disclosed their results, Dongmyeong University was the only domestic university to receive the 5-star certification.
It is considered a remarkable achievement that a university challenging the QS Stars evaluation for the first time received the highest certification, reflecting the results of Dongmyeong University's innovative efforts over the past four years.
Unlike the QS Ranking, which assigns university rankings through relative evaluation, the QS Stars Rating certifies the comprehensive excellence of universities through evaluations in nine areas: teaching, Academic Development, Facilities, Employability, Good Governance, Social Impact, Global Engagement, Subject Ranking or Programme Strength, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion.
While global university rankings mainly reflect papers and reputation, the Stars Rating provides objective information from various perspectives to universities and stakeholders, making it an important criterion for students worldwide when choosing universities for study abroad. Dongmyeong University received 5 stars in five of the nine areas: teaching, Academic Development, Facilities, Employability, and Social Impact.
As of December 2024, there are 136 universities with 5-star ratings, including Pennsylvania State University ranked 89th in the QS World Ranking and the University of Canterbury in New Zealand ranked 261st.
Dongmyeong University's high evaluation is attributed to the educational philosophy and university innovation efforts of President Jeon Ho-hwan, who took office in 2021. Dongmyeong University is creating a new breeze in university education through 체덕지 (Body, Virtue, Wisdom) education based on Do-ing education, whose core values are challenge, practice, and experience.
By establishing BIC (Busan International College), an English-only college specialized for international students, and enrolling 1,300 international students, Dongmyeong University has transformed into a global university.
Additionally, it is promoting innovative strategies such as the Green Startup Town and attracting the Gyeongsang National University Veterinary Hospital. Recognizing these achievements, the university ranked 34th globally in the innovation leadership category of the 2024 WURI (World University Ranking for Innovation) and was selected as one of the 30 preliminary Glocal universities in 2024.
President Jeon Ho-hwan of Dongmyeong University said, “It is a great achievement that a university challenging the QS Stars evaluation for the first time received a 5-star certification. Dongmyeong University's challenge will continue to lead to entering the top 200 in the QS Asia ranking, the top 600 worldwide, and achieving high rankings in global university evaluations such as THE. We will strive to revitalize Busan and place Dongmyeong University among the top 10 strong small and medium-sized universities in Korea.”
