“Leading the Inheritance of the May Spirit and Promotion of Merit Recipients’ Welfare”
Ando Geol, a member of the National Assembly from the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Gwangju Dongnam-eul), announced on the 23rd that he received a plaque of appreciation from the 5.18 Democratization Movement Merit Association on the 21st in recognition of his efforts to uphold the spirit of the 5.18 Democratization Movement and to improve the welfare of its meritorious persons.
Representative Ando was credited with greatly contributing to the welfare of over 1,300 members and bereaved families by establishing support policies such as granting eligibility for medical benefits. In particular, he received strong support for presenting concrete and sustainable policy alternatives that could be tangibly felt by the meritorious persons.
The award ceremony was held at a restaurant in Gwangju with the attendance of Yoon Namsik, president of the 5.18 Democratization Movement Merit Association, as well as association officials and meritorious persons. President Yoon said, "We deeply appreciate Representative Ando Geol's dedicated efforts and the establishment of practical support measures," adding, "His legislative activities to uphold the spirit of the democratization movement and improve the welfare of meritorious persons have been outstanding."
Representative Ando stated, "The 5.18 Democratization Movement is the cornerstone of democracy and a historical pride of the Republic of Korea," and expressed his commitment to "do my utmost to carry on the value of this meaningful movement and ensure that the meritorious persons and their families receive the honor they deserve." He added, "I will continue to work with local residents and devote myself even more to legislative activities for the stability of people's livelihoods and the development of the region."
