Ulsan City Launches 'AI Autonomous Manufacturing System' Project to Accelerate Innovation in Shipbuilding Industry

Secured 3 Billion Won for Industry Ministry Leading Project

Initiating Development of Collaborative Robot-Based System

Ulsan City is launching the ‘Development Project for Core Technologies of AI-based Autonomous Manufacturing Using Collaborative Robots’ to advance the shipbuilding industry.

On the 23rd at 4 p.m., Ulsan City will hold the ‘Overall Workshop and Technology Exchange Meeting for the Development Project of Core Technologies of AI-based Autonomous Manufacturing Using Collaborative Robots’ at the HD Hyundai Mipo Technology Innovation Center.

About 30 participants, including officials from Ulsan City, Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, University of Ulsan, and HD Hyundai Mipo, will attend the event.

This project was initiated after Ulsan City secured 3 billion KRW in national funding by being selected in September for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s AI Autonomous Manufacturing Leading Project competition.

The project focuses on building an autonomous manufacturing system by integrating AI technologies such as process simulation and digital twin with collaborative robots currently operating in core shipbuilding processes like welding and assembly. The main goal is to improve productivity and strengthen the regional shipbuilding ecosystem by sharing and disseminating technology with external partner companies.

As many processes in the shipbuilding industry still rely heavily on manual labor, the need for automation technology has been consistently raised. Through the demonstration of an intelligent autonomous manufacturing system in this project, efficient shipbuilding is expected to be realized, creating a collaborative environment between humans and robots.

An HD Hyundai Mipo official said, “The competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry depends on innovative technology,” adding, “This project will establish an important foundation to enhance process efficiency and strengthen competitiveness in the global market by applying collaborative robots and AI technology on-site.”

A Ulsan City official stated, “This project is expected to be an opportunity for Ulsan’s shipbuilding industry to take a technological leap forward,” and added, “We will support strengthening the technological capabilities of local SMEs and help Ulsan become a hub for AI and autonomous manufacturing technologies.”
