Asphalt specialist company SG announced on the 23rd that it has obtained a patent for Eco Steel Ascon, which was filed in Ukraine last May.
The newly acquired patent covers the technology for "Production of Steelmaking Slag Aggregate and Manufacturing Method of Steelmaking Slag Asphalt Concrete Mixture," and it was registered just seven months after filing, proving the company's technological capabilities. Domestically, after nine years of research and development, SG was the first in the asphalt industry to obtain a related patent in July 2020.
Unlike regular asphalt concrete, Eco Steel Ascon is produced using slag newly processed from by-products generated after steelmaking, resulting in significantly improved strength and durability compared to conventional asphalt concrete. Additionally, it is an eco-friendly product as it does not use natural aggregates required for general asphalt concrete production, thereby reducing forest destruction.
A company representative stated, "Ukraine's steel industry boasts the 12th largest production volume in the world and accounts for 12% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), making it a core industry. Ukraine is suitable for Eco Steel Ascon production not only due to post-war long-term reconstruction but also because of the large amount of slag discharged."
He added, "In addition to the recently registered Ukrainian patent, we have also filed patents for Eco Steel Ascon in India and Indonesia and are awaiting registration. We plan to file additional patents beyond these three countries and will actively pursue overseas market expansion through this."
SG has signed two contracts in Ukraine for road maintenance works. The local subsidiary, 'SG Ukraine,' has also been established and is smoothly proceeding with necessary procedures such as acquiring local factories.
Meanwhile, the company announced that on the 17th, it signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding in India with POSCO International and Indian construction company Ashoka Buildcon. Through this, it is expected to actively engage in road construction projects in India in the future.
