Full-Scale Hosting Efforts Begin Next Year... Expected to Enhance City's Status as a Global Center for Patriots and Veterans
Daejeon City announced that it has been selected as the host city in Korea for the 2029 Invictus Games, the world sports competition for wounded veterans.
The city submitted a letter of intent to participate as a candidate city to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs last October, and on the 20th, it was officially chosen as the host city at the "2029 Invictus Games Bid Committee" organized by the ministry.
In December, the city plans to apply for international event approval from the Ministry of Economy and Finance through the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, sign an agreement with the ministry in January next year, and then submit a letter of intent to host to the Invictus Games Foundation (IGF) in the first half of the year.
The Invictus Games is a global sports event for wounded veterans founded by Prince Harry of the United Kingdom, with the first competition held in the UK in 2014, and has since been held biennially.
From 2014 to 2023, a total of six editions have been held, and next year's event is scheduled to take place in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada.
The city plans to emphasize that Korea, as the only divided nation to overcome the scars of the Korean War and grow into a global economic powerhouse, is the most suitable country to deliver the Invictus Games' message of peace and unity to the world.
The final host city selection will be announced in 2026, and the city will actively promote its bid in cooperation with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, other government agencies, and veterans' organizations.
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, said, "Being selected as the host city for the 2029 Invictus Games in Korea is a recognition of Daejeon's capabilities and potential. We will do our utmost to promote our unique veterans' culture to the world and to be recognized as an international city of veterans' affairs."
