2.3cm Snowfall from 20th to 21st... Citizens Participate in Snow Removal as a Daily Practice

Hanam City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Hyun-jae) created a warm snow removal culture by voluntarily coming out to the streets and conducting rapid snow removal operations when 2.3 cm of snow fell from 10 p.m. on the 20th to 8 a.m. on the 21st.

In the Hanam area, 2.3 cm of snowfall was recorded from 10 p.m. on the 20th to 8 a.m. on the 21st. Hanam City strengthened patrols on major roads and carried out snow removal operations in two phases, spreading 330 tons of deicing agents and shoveling throughout all sections.

The Hanam City Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters deployed a total of 113 personnel and utilized 20 snow removal trucks and 14 one-ton trucks stationed at 14 Dong Administrative Welfare Centers to work through the night. However, the snow did not stop and continued to accumulate.

Especially in vulnerable areas such as alleys, side streets, and slopes, more manpower was needed because if snow removal was not completed, the subzero temperatures could turn the roads into icy surfaces.

At this time, related organizations such as the resident autonomy committees and neighborhood leaders of each Dong, ‘Miss Z’ (Misa Garbage Zero) conducting cleanliness activities in Misa 1-dong, the ‘Wirye Dream Volunteer Group’ leading environmental improvement in Wirye-dong, as well as apartment residents, village residents, building owners, and store employees from 14 Dongs in the district, totaling about 300 citizens, voluntarily came out to participate in the snow removal work.

Citizens, armed with padding jackets, scarves, and gloves, held snow shovels, scrapers, and brooms in their hands and cleared snow not only in front of their homes and stores but also in public places such as elementary schools, bus stops, and slopes. This was an act of consideration for the safety of children and the elderly, who are especially vulnerable to falls on icy roads.

Mayor Lee Hyun-jae of Hanam City said, “The mature civic consciousness shown by our residents, including the case in Sinjang 2-dong where an individual personally drove a tractor to clear snow throughout the village, has been recognized as a community culture that Hanam City should continue beyond simple snow removal.” He emphasized, “Our city will continue to create a safer and happier Hanam City through proactive administration that strengthens public-private cooperation.”
