Jeonbuk Province to Provide Activity Funds for 'Carbon Neutral Program Pilot Project'

845 Recipients and 2,381 ha Confirmed

Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 20th that it will provide activity fees to farmers who participated in the pilot project for the carbon neutrality program this year and practiced low-carbon farming activities.

This project is gaining attention as a new model in which agriculture can contribute to environmental conservation and sustainability.

The pilot project for the carbon neutrality program officially recognizes national greenhouse gas reduction achievements and supports activity fees for farmers who practice three types of low-carbon farming activities that can be easily applied on farms: ▲mid-season drainage ▲shallow intermittent irrigation ▲biochar application.

The support details are 150,000 won per hectare for mid-season drainage, 160,000 won per hectare for shallow intermittent irrigation, and 364,000 won per hectare for biochar application. If all three activities are implemented, a maximum of 674,000 won per hectare can be supported.

Applications for water management in rice paddies were received from January to March, and for biochar application in August. Once selected farmers implement the activities and submit supporting documents, Korea Rural Community Corporation conducts on-site inspections and implementation verification. As a result, 845 farmers and 2,381 hectares have been finalized as the recipients.

Jeonbuk Province plans to ease the minimum application area from the current 50 hectares to 20 hectares next year, allowing more farmers to participate, and to expand the scope of low-carbon farming activities by adding autumn plowing. Through this, the province aims to encourage farmer participation and further strengthen the effect of greenhouse gas reduction.

Choi Jaeyong, Director of the Department of Agricultural Life, Livestock and Food, said, "Responding to climate change has become an essential task in the agricultural sector. Low-carbon farming activities are an effective way for farmers to take the lead in responding to climate change and participate in greenhouse gas reduction. I hope that many farmers will join next year as well to help realize sustainable agriculture."
