The Korea Student Aid Foundation (Chairman Bae Byeong-il) and the Ministry of Education (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho) are accepting applications for the first round of the National Scholarship for the first semester of the 2025 academic year from the 21st to 6 p.m. on the 26th.
The National Scholarship is an income-linked scholarship provided by the government to students whose income and assets are below a certain level and who meet academic criteria, in order to alleviate the tuition burden for university students.
The financial aid assessment section reflects the income evaluation amount of the student and household members (parents or spouse), the income conversion amount of assets such as real estate, and deductions based on the number of siblings, and the calculation takes about eight weeks.
Eligible applicants include all university students such as current students, freshmen, transfer students, re-enrolled students, and returning students. Applications can be submitted 24 hours a day through the Korea Student Aid Foundation website and the ‘Korea Student Aid Foundation’ mobile app. When applying for the National Scholarship, Type I and II and multi-child scholarships are applied for simultaneously. Current students are generally required to apply in the first round, but may apply in the second round up to twice during their enrollment.
Since many applicants may access the website on the application deadline, causing possible access issues, university students who have not yet applied for the National Scholarship are encouraged to apply immediately.
In the 2025 academic year, the support criteria have been expanded from the previous 8 financial aid assessment sections or below to 9 sections or below, significantly increasing the number of eligible recipients from about 1 million to 1.5 million. For the newly eligible 9th section, Type I National Scholarship recipients can receive 1 million KRW annually, and for multi-child recipients, the first and second children can receive 1.35 million KRW annually, and the third child and beyond can receive 2 million KRW annually.
Therefore, students who were not eligible for scholarship support in the 2024 academic year due to income requirements should check their eligibility and actively apply for scholarships.
Applicants for the National Scholarship must complete consent for providing household member information and submit any additional required documents by 6 p.m. on January 2, 2025.
