The Gyeongbuk Provincial Party Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea urged on the 19th in a statement, "The People Power Party should declare its position on not nominating a candidate for the Kimcheon mayoral by-election."
The Democratic Party's Gyeongbuk Committee said, "With the loss of Mayor Kim Chung-seop's position, the by-election scheduled for April 2 next year has been confirmed, yet the People Power Party has not yet announced its stance on non-nomination. On November 28, the Supreme Court upheld the original sentence of 2 years imprisonment with a 3-year probation for Mayor Kim Chung-seop of Kimcheon, who was accused of distributing holiday gifts worth 66 million won to voters, resulting in his loss of the mayoral position."
The Gyeongbuk Democratic Party continued, "In Gyeongbuk, the April by-elections next year will include one metropolitan council member seat (Seongju-gun electoral district), one basic council member seat (Goryeong-gun Na electoral district), as well as the Kimcheon mayoral by-election. The registration for main candidates is from March 13 to 14, 2025, and preliminary candidate registration for basic council members begins on January 19, 2025, and for metropolitan council members from the 20th. Despite the approaching deadlines, the People Power Party has not issued any statement."
The Democratic Party's Gyeongbuk Committee stated, "Due to the illegal actions of Mayor Kim Chung-seop, several current and former public officials have been punished, and the trial has dragged on for over two years, causing a serious administrative vacuum and anger among citizens. If the People Power Party has not forgotten former leader Han Dong-hoon's key pledge that 'no candidates will be nominated in accident areas,' we hope they will promptly clarify their position of 'non-nomination' for the Kimcheon mayoral by-election."
