The “1,000 Won Breakfast” project provides breakfast to university students, who have a high rate of skipping breakfast, for just 1,000 won. Since last year, Mokpo University has been operating a “Premium Breakfast Buffet Restaurant” utilizing the Ministry’s “1,000 Won Breakfast” initiative to offer high-quality, balanced morning meals.
The “Premium Breakfast Buffet Restaurant” offers a self-service buffet featuring rice and fried rice as staples, along with fresh salads, seasonal fruits, toast, sausages, nurungji, waffles and bread, cereal, curry, and other popular and diverse menu items preferred by students.
Notably, this year, the support from EPIS increased from 1,000 won to 2,000 won, and with additional backing from the university development fund, local governments, and corporations, the university was able to provide a wider variety of menu options and improved quality breakfasts. During exam periods, free breakfast events received enthusiastic responses from students, contributing to a participation rate increase of about 10% compared to the previous year and a satisfaction rate of 88.7%.
President Song Hacheol stated, “Since last year, by operating the ‘Premium Breakfast Buffet Restaurant,’ we have provided breakfast with a variety of menus to about 300 students daily, totaling around 56,000 students a year. We are grateful to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for receiving the Grand Prize in the ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ best practices. Going forward, we will actively participate in government policies to promote rice consumption and will fully support school budgets to reflect student trends and offer rich, high-quality menus.”
