Strengthening AI Sovereignty through Sovereign Cloud

Leading domestic artificial intelligence (AI) company Naver Cloud received the Minister of Science and ICT Award at the '2024 Asia AI Awards' held on the 19th.

Naver Cloud helps customers choose and use services in the form they desire, including the general cloud-based large language model (LLM) service HyperCLOVA X. From February last year to October this year, it has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with over 70 companies to support AI innovation using HyperCLOVA X.

In November last year, it opened the data center 'Gak Sejong,' operating the largest-scale graphics processing units (GPUs) in Korea optimized for ultra-large-scale AI and high computational processing. Through this, it has laid the foundation for AI and cloud to expand into various industrial sectors.

It is leading domestic AI development by being the third in the world to develop the ultra-large-scale AI 'HyperCLOVA.' The upgraded version of HyperCLOVA, the LLM HyperCLOVA X, is also noted as the only model based on the Korean language.

The Naver Cloud AI organization has also been recognized for its research achievements, with 107 papers in 2022 and 93 papers last year, based on conferences evaluated as global top-tier. In August this year, it unveiled multimodal technology based on HyperCLOVA X capable of processing images and voice in addition to text. The conversational AI agent ‘CLOVA X’ was updated with image understanding capabilities, enabling it to converse based on information extracted from images and related questions.

It has also contributed to the expansion of the domestic AI ecosystem. In April, Naver Cloud established the 'AI Joint Research Center' in collaboration with Intel to activate domestic AI research and strengthen the diversity of the AI chip ecosystem.

Through sovereign cloud capabilities, it is also strengthening AI sovereignty. It has developed a cloud platform to respond to the requirements of government and public sector clients. Sovereign cloud services are supported not only domestically but also tailored to the needs of customers in other countries.
