Ministry of Education Conducts Survey After Observing Demonstrations from 13th to 15th
Parents Show Little Change in Concerns Over Digital Overdependence
The satisfaction levels of teachers and parents who observed classes using artificial intelligence (AI) digital textbooks, which the government plans to introduce in certain grades next year, increased compared to before the observation.
The Ministry of Education disclosed on the 16th the results of a 5-point scale survey comparing the satisfaction of teachers and parents before and after observing the AI digital textbook demonstration at the '2024 Korea Education Innovation Expo' held at KINTEX in Ilsan from the 13th to the 15th.
Surveying 356 teachers, the average satisfaction score across eight items rose from 3.97 before the observation to 4.33 afterward. Satisfaction improved in all individual items after the observation. The score for the item "AI digital textbooks provide analysis results of students' learning processes and outcomes, helping support student growth through counseling using student data" increased from 4.05 to 4.44 after the observation. The satisfaction score for "AI digital textbooks were developed in accordance with the intent and achievement standards of the 2022 revised curriculum" changed from 3.98 to 4.36.
Among 176 parents, the average score rose from 3.53 before the observation to 4.23 afterward. For the item "I think AI digital textbooks will help increase my child's interest and engagement in school classes," the score increased from 3.52 to 4.27. The satisfaction score for "I think AI digital textbooks will help teachers pay attention to and assist each student individually" rose from 3.53 to 4.28.
However, parents' concerns about their children's overdependence on digital devices remained. For the item "I think AI digital textbooks will cause my child to develop problems with overdependence on digital devices," parents' satisfaction score after the observation was 3.74. Although this is lower than before the observation (3.79), unlike other items, the change was only a slight 0.05 points.
The Ministry of Education explained that these survey results "indicate that overall satisfaction among teachers and parents increased after seeing AI digital textbooks actually used in classes."
Going forward, the Ministry plans to commission a professional organization to conduct a survey to verify whether AI digital textbooks help realize students' self-directed learning and personalized education, as well as support teachers' instructional innovation. The results will be announced by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) after the AI digital textbook training concludes.
Oh Seok-hwan, Vice Minister of Education, stated, "This survey reflects responses after directly seeing how AI digital textbooks can be utilized in actual classes. I believe many teachers and parents agree that AI digital textbooks can be a useful tool in instruction."
Meanwhile, a survey conducted by the Ministry of Education from the 3rd to the 10th among 832 lead teachers participating in AI digital textbook lesson design showed an average satisfaction score of 4.04 out of 5 across eight items, including student growth and teacher support functions.
