Lee Jun-seok Hints at Presidential Run Depending on Impeachment Citation Timing
Claims "Will Win if It Goes to Constitutional Court" Following Impeachment Bill Approval
Amid the passage of the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol in the National Assembly plenary session, Jung Yoo-ra, the daughter of Choi Seo-won (formerly Choi Soon-sil), criticized Lee Jun-seok, a member of the Reform New Party, who hinted at the possibility of running for president. Earlier, on the 14th, Lee Jun-seok appeared on JTBC Newsroom after the National Assembly passed the impeachment motion against President Yoon and responded to the anchor's question, "Do you have plans to run for president?" by saying, "I am seriously considering it."
On the 15th, Jung Yoo-ra posted on her social media (SNS), "Lee Jae-myung versus Lee Jun-seok, my heart swells," and questioned, "Have you lost your mind?" She then mocked, "Did you get hurt while clashing with the police during the martial law period, cursing them informally?" She also pointed out practical issues, saying, "You and the Reform New Party probably have no way to raise funds for the presidential election right now," and "Approaching it as if you can just bluff your age is problematic."
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Lee Jun-seok, member of the Reform New Party, are greeting each other as they cross paths while voting on the impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol at the National Assembly plenary session on the 7th.
Lee Jun-seok was born on March 31, 1985, and is currently 39 years old. In a previous interview, he stated, "Whether I run for president depends on the timing of the Constitutional Court's impeachment judgment," adding, "If the impeachment result comes out before the end of January, I cannot run; if it comes out in February, participation is possible." The Constitution of the Republic of Korea stipulates that a candidate for the presidential election must have the eligibility to be elected as a member of the National Assembly and must have reached the age of 40 on the election day. In cases where the president dies, resigns, or is disqualified, a presidential election must be held within 60 days from the date the reason for the election is confirmed.
Meanwhile, Jung Yoo-ra also commented on the passage of President Yoon's impeachment motion. She encouraged conservative supporters opposing the impeachment, saying, "Everyone, it's not all over yet, so calm down and let's fight well again starting tomorrow." She recalled the situation during the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in 2016, stating, "We need to rekindle the fighting spirit from nine years ago," and "Back then, there was even less hope. What made it possible even then was your strength." She emphasized, "We can do it again. We will win anyway if it goes to the Constitutional Court," and urged, "Let's do our best to protect the president who gave us the chance to fight."
