According to local media reports including the Yomiuri Shimbun on the 15th (local time), the incident took place around 8:25 PM at a McDonald's in Kokuraminami Ward, Kitakyushu City. At the time, the two middle school students, a boy and a girl, were reportedly standing in line at a kiosk to order food.

At that moment, an assailant entered the store and wielded a weapon against the students. The man first attacked the female middle school student who was standing at the end of the kiosk line, then immediately attacked the male student. Because the incident was sudden, the female student was unable to resist and collapsed, ultimately dying from excessive bleeding. The male student sustained a serious wound to his waist but is reported to be in stable condition.

The attack by the man reportedly lasted less than 30 seconds. Analysis of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage by the police revealed that the man attacked the students immediately upon entering the store and fled right after. During this process, he did not exhibit any preparatory actions such as looking around to identify his targets.

The middle school students had finished their academy classes and were buying hamburgers for dinner when they were attacked. The injured male student reportedly told the police that he was attacked by a person he did not know at all.

The suspect, who fled with the weapon, remains at large. The police have immediately established an investigation headquarters and are reportedly deploying about 90 personnel to track down the suspect.
