Isaac Andic (71), the founder of the Spanish fashion brand 'Mango', passed away on the 14th (local time) due to a mountain accident.
On the 15th (local time), the British daily The Guardian reported that Andic slipped from a 150m-high cliff while hiking with relatives in the Montserrat caves near Barcelona, Spain, and died. It was also reported that Andic's son was present at the scene during the accident.
Toni Ruiz, Mango's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), announced Andic's death in a statement, expressing regret at the unexpected news. He said, "He dedicated his life to Mango and was a role model for everyone," adding, "He devoted his life to Mango and left a lasting legacy in the company through his strategic vision, inspiring leadership, and unwavering commitment to the values he instilled in the company." He also stated, "Ensuring that Mango remains his pride is the greatest tribute we can offer."
Pedro S?nchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, also expressed condolences to the family of Isaac Andic, the founder of Mango who passed away in a tragic accident, through X (formerly Twitter), saying, "He transformed the Spanish brand into a global fashion leader through his business vision and efforts." The Spanish Jewish Community Federation said, "We are deeply saddened by the unexpected news of his death," adding, "He possessed excellent human qualities, was generous, and was always ready to help those in need. His many contributions greatly advanced Spanish Judaism."
Andic, of Jewish descent, was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1953 and moved to Spain with his family at the age of 13. He showed his business acumen by selling T-shirts to friends during his high school years in Barcelona and started in the clothing wholesale business before opening the first Mango store in 1984.
As of last year, Mango has expanded to more than 120 countries, with sales reaching 3.1 billion euros (approximately 4.7 trillion won). According to Forbes, Andic's net worth was 4.5 billion dollars (approximately 6.5 trillion won), and he also served as Mango's non-executive chairman.
