USTR Announcement... 25% Tariff on Tungsten
Starting January next year, a 50% tariff will be imposed on Chinese-made solar wafers and polysilicon imported into the United States. This is double the previous rate.
The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced on the 11th (local time) that it would take such measures under Section 301 of the Trade Act.
USTR also stated that tungsten tariffs will increase from the current 0% to 25% starting next year. The tariff hike will take effect on January 1.
Solar wafers and polysilicon are used in the manufacturing of solar cells, while tungsten is used in the production of weapons and computer chips.
USTR Representative Katherine Tai said, "The tariff increase announced today will weaken China’s harmful policies and practices," adding, "These measures will complement domestic investments made by the Biden-Harris administration to promote a clean energy economy while enhancing the resilience of critical supply chains."
Earlier in May, the Biden administration raised tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to 100% under Section 301 of the Trade Act, among other tariff increases targeting China.
