Korea Federation of SMEs Holds 2nd SME Carbon Neutrality and ESG Committee Meeting of 2024

The Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business (Kbiz) announced on the 12th that it held the "2024 2nd Small and Medium Enterprise Carbon Neutrality·ESG Committee" at the Samyang Foods Smart Eco Factory located in Wonju, Gangwon Province. The meeting was attended by 16 representatives from various industries, including Chairman Lee Sang-hoon (Chairman of the Korea Mining Cooperative), Moon Hee-bong (Chairman of the Korea Electrical Industry Cooperative), Jang Tae-soon (Chairman of the Korea Centrifugal Concrete Industry Cooperative), and Kim Geum-ju (Chairman of the Korea Construction Resources Mutual Aid Association).

The Samyang Foods Wonju Smart Eco Factory, where the committee was held, participated in the "Smart Eco Factory Construction Project" led by the Korea Environment Corporation in 2023, introducing facilities for greenhouse gas reduction, air pollution, and odor prevention. Through the establishment of the Wonju Smart Eco Factory, Samyang Foods achieved environmental and economic outcomes such as reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions by 197 tons, decreasing electricity consumption by 430,000 kW, and reducing water usage by 4,000 tons.

This committee was organized with a presentation and tour of the smart eco factory construction case to explore concrete measures for practicing carbon neutrality and ESG management in small and medium manufacturing enterprises. The committee members listened to presentations on Samyang Foods’ ESG management progress and the Wonju factory’s participation in the smart eco factory construction project, and toured greenhouse gas reduction facilities such as the ‘electric-driven air compressor’ using unused thermal energy and the ‘condensate recovery pump’ utilizing steam and air pressure. In particular, the members also inquired about the secret to the global success of ‘Buldak Bokkeum Myun,’ produced at the Wonju factory and leading the global Korean food wave.

Lee Sang-hoon, Chairman of the Small and Medium Enterprise Carbon Neutrality·ESG Committee, stated, “We will promote the smart eco factory construction support project centered on the SME industry networks and strive to encourage more small and medium enterprises to take an interest in carbon-neutral management.”
