Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Dong-geun) is collaborating with Seoul City (Mayor Oh Se-hoon) to introduce the ‘Climate Companion Card’ on the Uijeongbu Light Rail Transit (15 stations) and Line 1 (5 stations) by next year. As a result, up to 6,000 people on weekdays are expected to benefit, significantly enhancing citizens' convenience in using public transportation.

On the 11th, Uijeongbu City signed a ‘Uijeongbu-Seoul Climate Companion Card Project Participation Agreement’ with Seoul City at Seoul City Hall (6th floor video conference room). At this meeting, Mayor Kim Dong-geun and Mayor Oh Se-hoon exchanged in-depth opinions to strengthen the metropolitan transportation cooperation system between the two cities.

The Climate Companion Card is an integrated public transportation pass in Seoul that allows unlimited use of public transportation (subway, bus) and Seoul Bike (Ddareungi) within Seoul City during the selected usage period with a single fare charge.

As the center of northern Gyeonggi Province, Uijeongbu is geographically adjacent to northern Seoul, with very high connectivity and transportation accessibility for essential daily commuting areas. Therefore, this agreement is expected to serve as a milestone for improving mobility convenience for citizens commuting between the joint living areas of Uijeongbu and Seoul, as well as for balanced regional development.

The city plans to improve the Uijeongbu Light Rail Transit transportation card system in the first half of next year and promote the introduction of the Climate Companion Card in the second half.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said, “With the Climate Companion Card service area expanding to Uijeongbu, the center of northern Gyeonggi Province, the convenience of movement between metropolitan living areas is expected to improve significantly,” adding, “We will continue to actively pursue policies to provide the unlimited public transportation innovation service of the Climate Companion Card to more metropolitan citizens.”

Mayor Kim Dong-geun stated, “The introduction of the Climate Companion Card will not only provide citizens with more choices for using public transportation but also actively respond to the climate crisis by shifting demand from private cars to public transportation to reduce carbon emissions,” and added, “I hope that the revitalization of public transportation through this agreement will spread interest in Uijeongbu, a city where people want to walk, among its 470,000 citizens.”

Meanwhile, Uijeongbu City plans to strengthen cooperation based on Mayor Kim Dong-geun’s transportation policy vision of ‘creating a city that changes lives through citizen satisfaction and experiential transportation policies’ and Mayor Oh Se-hoon’s transportation philosophy that ‘all metropolitan residents commuting or attending school in Seoul are Seoul citizens.’
