"Attack on the Judiciary"
Prison Sentences Given Between 1926 and 1965
A man in the United States who attacked a judge during a trial out of dissatisfaction with the verdict was ultimately sentenced to a heavy prison term.
On the 10th (local time), according to foreign media including the New York Post, at a hearing held in Las Vegas, Nevada, Judge Susan Johnson sentenced Deobra Reden (31) to a prison term of at least 26 years and up to 65 years.
Earlier, on January 3rd, Reden requested probation during her trial for attempted assault at the Clark County District Court in Las Vegas. In court, Reden introduced herself by saying, "I am not a rebellious person. No matter how difficult it is, I never stop trying to do the right thing," appealing for leniency.
However, Judge Mary Kay Holsers pointed out Reden's past criminal record and began to indicate that she would impose a prison sentence. In response, Reden became enraged, jumped onto the podium, struck Judge Holsers on the head, and caused a disturbance. Judge Holsers condemned Reden in a victim statement, saying, "(Reden) decided to kill me and made every effort to achieve that."
Regarding her actions at the time, Reden said, "I am neither a bad person nor an evil person," and added, "I am not trying to excuse my behavior, but I am not a bad person." However, she claimed that she only remembered grabbing the judge's collar during the incident.
Reden's lawyer, Carl Arnold, emphasized that she has suffered from severe mental illness throughout her life and was not taking medication at the time of the incident. Arnold stated, "Reden is currently on medication and deeply remorseful." Nevertheless, Judge Johnson sentenced Reden to a heavy prison term, calling her actions "an attack on the judiciary."
