Paju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Kyung-il) announced on the 11th that it is accepting applications for the ‘2025 Eco-friendly Apple Snail Support Project’ aimed at expanding eco-friendly rice cultivation for rice farming households in the area until the 27th.

The ‘Apple Snail Farming Method’ is an eco-friendly farming technique where apple snails are released around the rice paddies after transplanting to eat weeds, reducing weeding costs and addressing labor shortages in rural areas.

Paju City subsidizes 50% of the purchase cost of apple snails through the support project, and this year, it received great response from farmers by supporting 19,788 kg to 198 households.

The support target is rice farming households registered as agricultural management entities in Paju City, and only rice cultivation plots registered under the agricultural management entities can apply. Applications can be submitted by visiting the Eup/Myeon Administrative Welfare Center for Eup/Myeon areas or the Agricultural Technology Center for Dong areas, based on the location of the farmland.

Farmers practicing the apple snail farming method must install separate barriers to prevent the apple snails from escaping into the natural environment and must collect them after use. Paju City plans to distribute reference materials on apple snail management measures to establish systematic follow-up management.

Jang Heung-jung, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, “We will actively strive to support apple snail seedlings to eco-friendly certified farms and farms planning certification within the city to ensure stable production of eco-friendly Paju rice.”
