LG Electronics announced on the 11th that CTO Kim Byung-hoon (Vice President) is scheduled to receive the Haedong Technology Award on the 13th. The Haedong Technology Award was established by the late Kim Jeong-sik, chairman of Daeduck Electronics and founder of the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation, to honor talents in the field of electronic engineering. It is recognized as a prestigious award in the domestic electronics, information, and communications sectors.

CTO Kim was selected as this year’s recipient in recognition of his contributions to enhancing national technological competitiveness through R&D innovation, including leading next-generation technology and standards development and securing patent rights, as well as contributing to holding world-class intellectual property.

CTO Kim is regarded as a global technology leader who has led R&D in various information and communication technology (ICT) fields for over 30 years. He worked as a semiconductor technology development expert at GCT Semiconductor, a fabless company for mobile communications semiconductors, and Qualcomm before joining LG Electronics in 2008, where he has led advanced technology research in semiconductor technology development, communications, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Since 2021, he has led the CTO division as the Chief Technology Officer overseeing LG Electronics’ R&D. He spearheads advanced R&D in future technologies such as 5G and 6G communications, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, system-on-chip (SoC), software (SW) platforms, mobility, and next-generation computing, while actively participating in standards activities.

CTO Kim has invented various core communication standard technologies and filed over 3,000 patents domestically and internationally. His achievements as an inventor are highly regarded. In May, he received the Gold Tower Industrial Medal at the 59th Inventors’ Day event. In 2020, he was selected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an honor given to the top 0.1% of experts in the fields of electrical, electronic, computer, and communications engineering, among more than 400,000 members across over 160 countries.

LG Electronics has secured world-class patent competitiveness, continuously creating innovations and leading the global market. The home appliance business leads the global market by continuously introducing innovative products and services never seen before. The TV business solidifies its technological leadership in premium product lines such as OLED TVs, including wireless and transparent technologies. In the automotive parts business, LG Electronics recently gained recognition for its patent technology in vehicle augmented reality (AR). Last month, LG Electronics received the Sejong Daewang Award (Grand Prize) at the '2024 Patent Technology Awards' hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office for its pioneering patents in vehicle AR navigation. It has achieved the number one global market share in the telematics field, which involves vehicle communication modules. LG Electronics has introduced innovative solutions such as the world’s first augmented reality-based head-up display (HUD) and future mobility digital cockpit.
