Japanese Prime Minister to US Defense Secretary: "Korean Martial Law, No One Could Have Imagined"

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that "no one could have imagined what happened in Korea" regarding the martial law situation in Korea.

According to Yonhap News on the 10th, Prime Minister Ishiba met with Secretary Austin at the Prime Minister's Official Residence in Tokyo and said, "The world is changing very rapidly on a weekly basis."


Prime Minister Ishiba also mentioned that issues such as the martial law situation in Korea and the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria could become historic events, emphasizing the need to take responsibility.


Secretary Austin said, "As Prime Minister Ishiba pointed out, this is a very dynamic period," and expressed gratitude for Japan's steadfastness. He added that he hopes the U.S.-Japan alliance will serve as a foundation for peace and stability in the region.


He also spoke about his achievements during his tenure, evaluating that the U.S.-Japan alliance has been strengthened compared to before.


Secretary Austin also met with Japanese Defense Minister Ken Nakatani. In his remarks, Austin stated, "We are advancing historic trilateral cooperation with Korea," and conveyed that the U.S. deterrence toward Korea and Japan is very strong.
