"Ruling Party Considers Delay Strategy Based on Situation"
The Democratic Party of Korea announced that it will push to hold a vote on the impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol at 5 p.m., two hours earlier than originally planned, during the National Assembly plenary session on the 7th.
Park Sung-joon, the Deputy Floor Leader for Operations, told reporters at the National Assembly on the 6th, "The Democratic Party's position is that the plenary session should be held and the vote conducted at 5 p.m. on the 7th."
He added, "We considered the possibility that the People Power Party might employ significant delay tactics regarding the impeachment vote, so we believe it should be done around 5 p.m."
The impeachment motion against President Yoon was reported around 12:48 a.m. during the plenary session held on the 5th. According to the Constitution, an impeachment motion must be voted on no earlier than 24 hours and no later than 72 hours after it is reported.
The presidential impeachment motion passes with the approval of at least two-thirds of the total members (300 members) of the National Assembly.
A re-vote on the special prosecutor law related to First Lady Kim Geon-hee will also take place. The Democratic Party decided to handle both the impeachment motion and the special prosecutor law simultaneously to prevent the ruling party from boycotting the plenary session. The re-vote on the special prosecutor law requires a quorum of more than half of the total members and approval by two-thirds of the members present. If ruling party members abstain from voting, the opposition members alone can pass the motion.
