"Establishing Substantial Rule of Law Is Necessary"
Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae expressed concern over the national turmoil caused by the 'December 3 Emergency Martial Law Incident' and urged the judiciary to carry out its fundamental duties.
At the regular nationwide court chiefs meeting held on the afternoon of the 6th, Chief Justice Cho stated, "Concerns about national turmoil are growing due to the recent martial law declaration incident." He added, "Especially in times like these, the judiciary must maintain its center and, without the slightest wavering, make every effort to establish substantive rule of law through trials based solely on the Constitution and laws, and to protect the fundamental rights of the people."
The Supreme Court's Judicial Administration Office also issued a statement on the morning of the 4th, immediately after the martial law was lifted, saying, "In accordance with the mission entrusted by the Constitution and laws, we will make every effort, with an unwavering attitude, to protect the freedom and rights of the people."
