Operation of Namwon Otchil Center with the Theme of 'Namwon Otchil'
Namwon City, Jeollabuk-do, will participate in the '2024 Craft Trend Fair,' the largest domestic craft specialized exhibition, from the 12th to the 15th.
On the 6th, the city announced that it will operate the 'Namwon Lacquer Pavilion' under the theme of 'Namwon Lacquer' at the Craft Trend Fair.
The concept of the 'Namwon Lacquer Pavilion' is 'Modern Furniture Utilizing Namwon Lacquer.' Through this exhibition, the city aims to showcase modern furniture made using lacquer refined with Namwon's polishing techniques, thereby promoting the modern artistic value and practicality of lacquer crafts to craftsmen and visitors nationwide.
Lacquer is a traditional coating material with efficient functions such as insect repellent, waterproofing, preservation, deodorization, antibacterial properties, and far-infrared radiation emission. Namwon is a traditional center for woodenware, where lacquer refining and traditional coating techniques have developed together as part of the finishing process in woodenware production.
In particular, the city possesses three intangible cultural heritage woodenware masters and four lacquer and refining masters, who are at the core of efforts to inherit traditional techniques.
Through the Craft Trend Fair and the Namwon Lacquer Pavilion, the city expects visitors to experience the communication between tradition and modernity, where Namwon's traditional lacquer culture harmonizes with modern furniture.
Meanwhile, since 2018, starting with 'Namwon Woodenware - Cup,' the city has participated annually to promote Namwon's lacquer wooden craft culture nationwide.
