A dentist who caused a traffic accident while driving multiple times without a license, without insurance, and under the influence of alcohol was sentenced to probation.
On the 7th, Judge Lee Soon-hyung of the Criminal Division 5 at the Seoul Western District Court announced that Mr. A (43), who is charged with violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving and driving without a license), was sentenced to 8 months in prison with 2 years of probation.
Mr. A was prosecuted for causing a traffic accident while driving approximately 4 km from Gangnam-gu to Yongsan-gu in Seoul at around 4:27 a.m. on July 27 last year, without a license and in a state of severe intoxication. At that time, Mr. A's blood alcohol concentration was reportedly 0.132%, far exceeding the level for license cancellation.
Mr. A is also accused of previously driving his Discovery passenger car and G7 passenger car alternately in February and June last year while unlicensed and uninsured.
The court stated, "Considering that the defendant drove multiple times without a license and insurance, and despite being under criminal trial for drunk driving at the time of some offenses, he drove under the influence again, the nature of the crime is by no means light." However, the court also took into account that "the defendant committed the offenses while mentally unstable due to suffering from a mental illness, amid a divorce lawsuit with his spouse and conflicts related to visitation with his child."
