After President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law, the six opposition parties submitted an impeachment motion and a vote is imminent. Amid this, the chairman of the board of Yoon’s alma mater, Chungam High School, expressed a troubled sentiment.
On the 5th, Yoon Myunghwa, chairman of the Chungam Academy board, posted on her social media account, "The Chungam teachers' office has been flooded with protest calls all day, and school bus drivers said passersby have been picking fights with them," adding, "I want to select Yoon Suk-yeol and Kim Yong-hyun as the shameful graduates of Chungam a million times over." She continued, "There has even been a petition to change the school name. It damages the national dignity and the school's honor," and said, "The current corporation, still struggling with the shameless appeal lawsuit from the corrupt old foundation, is doing its best." In another post, she expressed sympathy, saying, "I wonder what kind of emotional distress Chungam students are going through." It is understood that many criticisms have arisen as it became known that figures related to the martial law situation, including President Yoon, former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Military Counterintelligence Command Chief Yeo In-hyung, and 777th Command Commander Park Jong-seon, are all alumni of Chungam High School.
Later, Chairman Yoon told the educational media [Chang], "Because of having wrong seniors like Yoon Suk-yeol’s group who declared martial law and took the lead, Chungam High School students are suffering now," adding, "The current students are very disappointed with this martial law." She also explained the reason for her post, saying, "Because of them, our Chungam students are being insulted, but what fault do the students have?" and "As chairman of the Chungam Academy board, I feel sorry to the public and have a sense of self-reproach, which led me to write this." She previously served as the first Student Rights Advocate of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, an 8th-term member of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, and director of the Seoul Innovation Center, and is currently the 13th chairman of the Chungam Academy board.
On the morning of the 4th, when President Yoon Suk-yeol declared the lifting of martial law through an emergency national address, participants held placards at Gwanghwamun Square in Jongno-gu, Seoul, during the "Nationwide Emergency Action Proclamation of Comprehensive Resistance Movement for Realizing National Sovereignty and Yoon Suk-yeol's Resignation on Charges of Illegal Martial Law and Treason," organized by several civic groups including the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy. Earlier, on the 3rd at around 10:28 p.m., President Yoon declared martial law in an emergency national address. Subsequently, martial law troops gathered at the National Assembly and attempted to enter the main building around midnight, leading to clashes with Secretariat staff and party aides who tried to block them. Later, a motion to lift martial law was passed through a plenary session, and the government lifted martial law at 4:30 a.m. after a Cabinet meeting. On the afternoon of the 4th, the six opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, gathered at the National Assembly Secretariat in Yeouido, Seoul, to submit an impeachment motion against President Yoon. However, the People Power Party decided at a party meeting on the 5th to oppose the impeachment motion, and the Democratic Party is reportedly planning to push for a vote on the 7th.
Meanwhile, three months before the martial law declaration, on September 9, a comment was posted on a YouTube channel saying, "Yoon Suk-yeol (Chungam High School), Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun (Chungam High School), Counterintelligence Command Chief Yeo In-hyung (Chungam High School), 777th Command Commander Park Jong-seon (Chungam High School). These people are said to be preparing martial law. I thought you should know to prepare in advance." This comment attracted attention after it was discovered following the martial law declaration. Netizens reacted to the author with comments like "Who are you?" and "What is this person?"
