Mapo-gu, IoT-Based Reduction of High-Concentration Fine Dust in Winter

From December 2024 to March 2025, Seasonal Fine Dust Management System to Protect Residents' Health
Emission Vehicle Crackdown, Boiler Replacement Cost Support, Utilization of IoT-Based Measurement Network, etc.

Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Gang-su) will intensify the operation of the seasonal management system to reduce fine dust from December 2024 to March 2025, a period when high concentrations of fine dust frequently occur.


Now in its sixth year, the 'Fine Dust Seasonal Management System' is a policy that strengthens measures to reduce and manage fine dust emissions to protect the health of residents.


Mapo-gu plans to lower fine dust concentrations by setting 14 management tasks across four sectors: transportation, heating, workplaces, and exposure reduction.


First, in the transportation sector, the operation of Grade 5 emission vehicles, vehicles emitting excessive smoke, and idling vehicles will be restricted and monitored. Additionally, companies that limit entry and exit to their affiliated parking lots according to the passenger car 2-day operation system will receive a reduction in the traffic inducement charge by up to 15%.


In the heating sector, support will be provided for replacing home eco-friendly boilers for low-income households, and energy-intensive workplaces will be selected to check compliance with heating temperature regulations.

In the workplace sector, Mapo-gu will implement fine dust reduction management for 94 air pollutant-emitting workplaces and 49 dust-generating workplaces within the district. Furthermore, the citizen participation monitoring team will patrol junkyards, construction sites, and vacant lots near residential areas to prevent illegal burning of household waste.


In the exposure reduction sector, three sections (13.2 km) in areas densely populated with vulnerable facilities such as schools and hospitals will be designated as fine dust intensive management roads, where road surface cleaning and water cleaning frequency will be increased.


Along with this, indoor air quality management and fine dust alert systems will be implemented at 35 multi-use facilities such as daycare centers, subway stations, and movie theaters.


In particular, Mapo-gu plans to operate an Internet of Things (IoT)-based fine dust measurement network installed at 36 locations near schools, roads, and parks to display fine dust concentrations in real time, enabling residents to respond quickly.


Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We will actively promote the fine dust seasonal management system to do our best to protect the health of residents. When a fine dust advisory is issued, we ask residents to refrain from unnecessary outings and to cooperate with Mapo-gu’s fine dust reduction measures.”
