"When freedom calls, let's fill the streets again"

Voices condemning President Yoon Seok-yeol are spreading across university campuses following the declaration of martial law for the first time in 45 years.

According to the Jeonnam National University Student Council on the 5th, students issued a political statement titled "Strongly Condemning Yoon Seok-yeol's Martial Law" the day before.

The Student Council stated, "The sudden declaration of martial law by Yoon Seok-yeol on the 3rd caused immeasurable shock and concern among the people of the Republic of Korea and our university students."

They continued, "The justification and process of this martial law were clearly illegal. The proclamation also evidently had the potential to unjustly infringe upon the basic rights and freedoms of the people."

They emphasized, "It is an immense wound in Gwangju, which fully embodies the spirit and history of May 18, and when thinking of the citizens of Gwangju and our predecessors who were persecuted under the unjust martial law of military dictatorship, it is truly an anger that cannot be contained."

They added, "We will uphold the legacy and values of our predecessors who sacrificed their youth and lives to resist the dictatorship and fight against injustice, and we will hold those responsible for this situation accountable."
