Gyeonggi Philharmonic Performs Works by World-Renowned Composer Jin Eun-sook

December 12-13 Final Masters Series of the Year
'Subito con Forza'·Mozart·Bartok

The Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Jin Eun-sook's work 'Subito con forza' at this year's final regular concert. Jin Eun-sook, who resides in Germany, is a world-renowned composer who became the first Asian to receive the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in Germany this year.

The Gyeonggi Philharmonic will hold the final Masters Series concerts of the year on the 12th at the Gyeonggi Arts Center Grand Theater and on the 13th at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall. The first piece performed will be 'Subito con forza,' a short orchestral work about five minutes long composed by Jin Eun-sook in 2020, the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth.

Jin Eun-sook receives commissions from world-class orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic. 'Subito con forza' was also composed upon a joint commission from the prestigious Dutch orchestra Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO), BBC Radio 3, and the Cologne Philharmonic.

After performing 'Subito con forza' as the opening piece, the Gyeonggi Philharmonic will perform Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Bart?k's Concerto for Orchestra.

The conductor will be Kim Sun-wook, the artistic director of the Gyeonggi Philharmonic.

Artistic Director Kim Sun-wook stated, "This concert is themed around 'transcendence,' overcoming situations or surpassing limits. Despite being within the same classical genre, modern music is clearly distinguished from the classical, but composer Jin Eun-sook attempts to show that originally they were part of one continuous flow, using Beethoven, who symbolizes the great classics, as the main material to attempt transcendence of the era. The following two pieces also break down the boundaries between symphony and concerto, presenting new perspectives. Mozart, who was fascinated by the emergence of a new clarinet that surpassed previous limits and composed his last concerto, and Bart?k, who composed this work overcoming adversity while living abroad, suffering physical decline and financial difficulties, complete the program with works that reached a higher realm."

Artistic Director Kim Sun-wook has a special connection with composer Jin Eun-sook as a pianist. He performed Jin Eun-sook's Piano Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic and participated in the 2014 Deutsche Grammophon album release 'Jin Eun-sook: Three Concertos.' The piano concerto included in the album was recorded by Kim Sun-wook in collaboration with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

The second piece, Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, is his last concerto composed two months before his death in 1791. Pascal Moragues, principal clarinet of the Paris Orchestra and professor at the Paris Conservatory, will be the soloist. This will be Pascal Moragues' first collaboration in Korea.

Bart?k's 'Concerto for Orchestra' is also his last orchestral work. It is considered one of the greatest classical music works of the 20th century that combines modernity and folk elements, and alongside Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring,' it has become a classic repertoire of the 20th century.
