The Public Administration Committee Also to Hold Emergency Inquiry on Martial Law Tomorrow
The National Assembly's National Defense Committee announced on the 4th that it will hold a plenary session on the 5th to conduct an urgent inquiry regarding the circumstances of President Yoon Seok-yeol's declaration and lifting of martial law.
The Democratic Party of Korea requested the National Defense Committee to hold a plenary session for the urgent inquiry on that day. The People Power Party is also expected to attend the meeting and agree to the opposition's demand for witness appearances.
The attendees include Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Army Chief of Staff Park An-su who was appointed as the Martial Law Commander, Army Special Warfare Command Commander Kwak Jong-geun who mobilized martial law troops from his unit, Counterintelligence Command Commander Yeo In-hyung, and Capital Defense Command Commander Lee Jin-woo.
Opposition lawmakers are expected to focus their questioning on General Park, particularly regarding the drafting process of the martial law proclamation order that specified bans on political activities and media control.
Seong Il-jong, chairman of the National Defense Committee from the People Power Party, wrote on Facebook that "National Defense Committee members from both ruling and opposition parties, who were visiting the Japanese United Nations Command rear base, suspended all schedules and returned home on the first flight this morning," adding, "The National Defense Committee will thoroughly review the situation to alleviate the concerns of the public."
The National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee is also scheduled to hold a plenary session on the 5th to conduct an urgent inquiry related to the declaration of martial law.
