Steel Industry Crisis Response, Dongkuk Steel H-Beam Factory Site Visit

With the recent suspension of operations at Hyundai Steel Plant 2 and the ensuing crisis faced by the local steel industry, Pohang City held an emergency meeting with related organizations to seek countermeasures and actively prepared measures to overcome the crisis facing the local steel industry by forming an Industrial Crisis Response T/F team.

Mayor Lee visited the Dongkuk Steel H-beam factory to encourage company executives and workers, toured the production site to share the current situation, and took time to listen to the difficulties faced by company officials and the steel industry.

The mayor said, “Pohang is the center of the steel industry, and Dongkuk Steel has greatly contributed to the local economy and job creation,” adding, “Given the current internal and external conditions, the city will actively respond by establishing response policies at the city level and building an organic cooperation system with related organizations to overcome the crisis faced by Dongkuk Steel and the Pohang steel industry.”

To respond to the steel industry crisis, Pohang City visited the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to request designation as a ‘Special Industrial Crisis Response Area,’ extension of the ‘Special Support Area for SMEs,’ government subsidies, and reduction of industrial electricity rates. Going forward, the city plans to explore various measures to strengthen the global competitiveness of the steel industry and respond to the crisis through close cooperation with the local steel industry.
