Five metropolitan governors affiliated with the Democratic Party of Korea issued a joint statement urging, "President Yoon Seok-yeol must step down immediately."
Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Governor Kim Kwan-young, Gwangju Metropolitan Mayor Kang Ki-jung, Jeonnam Province Governor Kim Young-rok, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Governor Oh Young-hoon released a joint statement on the 4th, saying, "The night of martial law has ended, and the day of judgment has dawned," adding, "Last night’s failed ‘coup attempt’ by the president made it clear that President Yoon Seok-yeol lacks the qualifications and ability to be responsible for the governance of the Republic of Korea."
They continued, "The only thing President Yoon Seok-yeol can do for the people is to ‘resign immediately,’" and evaluated, "In May 1980, democratic citizens risked their lives to resist Chun Doo-hwan’s military coup, and during the Park Geun-hye administration, they raised candles to lead the impeachment of the president. Last night, they once again stopped a ‘coup attempt’ in the most democratic way."
In particular, they emphasized, "This is the true strength of our Republic of Korea," and stated, "Just as the pain of Gwangju in May 1980 was sublimated into the democratization of Korea, last night’s crisis must be turned into an opportunity for the maturation of Korean democracy."
On the same day, the five metropolitan governors agreed on three points: ▲The declaration of martial law by President Yoon Seok-yeol is clearly unconstitutional and invalid ▲President Yoon Seok-yeol must take responsibility for destroying the constitutional order and resign immediately ▲Stabilizing the daily lives of residents and strengthening the management of people’s livelihoods.
