Busan Urban Corporation Holds Final Meeting of 'BMC Waterfront City Working Group'

Discussion on Practical Measures for 'Waterfront City Climate Adaptation Strategies and Directions'

Expert Working Group Establishes 7 Major Design Strategies for Climate Crisis Response

Busan Urban Corporation successfully held the final meeting of the BMC Waterfront City Working Group on the theme of ‘Climate Adaptation Strategies and Directions for Waterfront Cities’ on the 27th of last month.

This working group was launched in March to explore climate change response plans for waterfront spaces applicable to major development projects promoted by the corporation. Discussions have continued through a total of eight expert presentations and in-depth debates.

The final meeting centered on the presentation ‘Climate Adaptation Strategies and Directions for Waterfront Cities’ by Professor Byeongcheol Ahn from the Department of Forest Landscape Architecture at Wonkwang University.

Working group members, including Lee Sangyong, Head of the Strategic Business Division at Busan Urban Corporation, and other corporation officials participated in a free discussion format to share diverse opinions.

Professor Ahn introduced climate change response cases in various fields such as water management, biodiversity protection, and food security, and proposed community-based climate adaptation models like carbon-neutral villages. The meeting also discussed seven major climate adaptation design strategies for waterfront city development. These are expected to serve as important reference materials for Busan City’s future climate-adaptive urban development strategy formulation.

Through this working group, the corporation broadly gathered opinions from various experts and derived practically applicable measures. The final report is scheduled to be published and distributed by January next year.

Lee Sangyong, Head of the Strategic Business Division at Busan Urban Corporation, stated, “The results of this working group’s discussions represent a significant achievement in laying the foundation for resilient waterfront space creation in response to climate change. Moving forward, we will continue to collaborate with experts from various fields to create safe and functional waterfront spaces and to continuously seek integrated and effective solutions.”

Busan Urban Corporation plans to actively adopt innovative and environmentally friendly strategies for sustainable urban development.
