When President Yoon Seok-yeol announced the declaration of martial law late at night on the 3rd, Mayor Baek immediately went to his office at Pocheon City Hall and, together with senior officials, closely monitored the situation, responding swiftly.
Although there was little a local government head could specifically do under martial law, Mayor Baek stayed awake until 4:30 a.m. during the Cabinet meeting, preparing for any unforeseen circumstances until the martial law was lifted.
Immediately after the resolution to lift martial law was passed, he instructed senior officials to quickly assess public opinion across sectors including residents, military units, police, economy, and healthcare, and to actively support citizen stability to minimize public unrest.
Furthermore, he emphasized the establishment of public service discipline to prevent any public officials from taking advantage of the nationally chaotic situation to engage in misconduct.
Mayor Baek Young-hyun stated, “In this very difficult situation for public livelihood and the national economy, I will do my utmost as Mayor of Pocheon to ensure stability in the community without any wavering, so that the declaration of martial law does not cause confusion or hardship.”
