From June 13 to 17 on Naver Performance Live
An Boyoon's 'A Way of Mourning' and 'Complete Apology' Original Works
Doosan Art Center announced on the 4th that the play Ways of Mourning will be streamed for free on Naver Performance Live from the 13th to the 17th.
Ways of Mourning is a new work by DAC Artist director Shin Jin-ho, which was performed last October at Doosan Art Center Space111 and in November at the Ensemble Hall of Daejeon Arts Center.
The play deeply explores the unique mourning process of individuals within our society and recorded a 92% seat occupancy rate during its Seoul performances.
The play Ways of Mourning is based on the works of writer Ahn Bo-yoon, who has won the Hyo-seok Lee Literary Award Grand Prize and the Kim Seung-ok Literary Award. It connects the stories Ways of Mourning, Complete Apology, and the unpublished work Just Once.
It pursues the unknown truths and sincere feelings of the perpetrator and victim of violence, the sister of a criminal older brother, and their families by staging Just Once, which deals with the story after Seung-gyu, a school violence perpetrator, dies; Ways of Mourning, which addresses conflicts between bereaved families and witnesses; and Complete Apology, which covers the earlier story. Through this, it questions the ambiguous boundaries of perpetration and victimization, responsibility and evasion, which cannot be defined by simplistic ethics, and depicts each character’s way of mourning.
The online performance of Ways of Mourning can be viewed by anyone for free on the Naver Performance Live platform. No reservation is required, and viewers can watch it anytime and anywhere during the screening period without any limit on the number of views. The screening video is a pre-recorded production of the actual performance and provides Korean subtitles. Additionally, a program book containing the director’s notes and reference materials to help deepen understanding of the work is available for free on the Doosan Art Center website.
DAC Artist director Shin Jin-ho has focused on contradictory incidents occurring within social systems and institutions, exploring the complexities hidden within them. Director Shin stated that rather than focusing on 'death' itself, he concentrated on the emotions and experiences afterward, hoping that by witnessing moments when the boundary between good and evil becomes blurred, audiences can face others’ pain more deeply through Ways of Mourning.
As part of its Mecenat activities, Doosan Art Center continuously offers free online performances to provide opportunities for experiencing works by young creators to a wider audience, including those who find it difficult to visit theaters or are unfamiliar with watching performances, thereby expanding the base of theater audiences. So far, it has re-screened Cases of Wrong Growth, Class, Not a Dream but a Play, Dreaming?I am not Chunhyang, and No Winner, which won the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Play at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards.
