When President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law through an emergency address on the 3rd, foreign media also urgently reported the news simultaneously.
The US daily newspaper The New York Times (NYT) is urgently reporting on June 3 (local time) the news of President Yoon Seok-yeol's declaration of martial law.
On the 3rd (local time), the US CNN reported that President Yoon announced 'martial law' without prior notice during a late-night TV speech and accused the opposition Democratic Party of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-state activities.
CNN stated, "He justified this decision as an inevitable measure to protect the people's freedom and safety, ensure the nation's sustainability, and pass on a stable country to future generations."
US daily newspapers The New York Times (NYT) and The Washington Post (WP) also reported the news of President Yoon's declaration of martial law through breaking news.
WP wrote, "The South Korean president declared martial law to suppress the opposition," adding, "President Yoon blamed the opposition for unprecedented impeachment attempts against government officials and budget cuts for next year." The newspaper noted, "Since taking office in 2022, President Yoon has struggled with low approval ratings, and political backlash related to his wife and senior officials of the ruling People Power Party is growing," and added, "It is unclear how this (martial law declaration) decision will affect South Korea's governance system."
NYT reported, "For the first time since the end of military dictatorship in the late 1980s, a South Korean president has declared martial law," and "Since being elected president in 2022, Yoon has been in almost constant political opposition with the opposition controlling the legislature." The outlet said, "All Korean news broadcasts are continuing to air the president's speech from an hour ago," and noted, "It is unclear exactly what martial law entails and what will immediately change in South Korea."
