Smiles at Supporters After Life Sentence Verdict

A woman in the United States was sentenced to life imprisonment after causing the suffocation death of her boyfriend by putting him inside a travel bag. She sparked outrage by smiling at her supporters immediately after the sentencing.

On the 2nd (local time), the Associated Press reported that the Orange County Court in Orlando, Florida, held a sentencing hearing and sentenced Sarah Boon (47), who was charged with murder, to life imprisonment. Boon is accused of killing her boyfriend, George Torres, at her home in Winter Park on February 23, 2020. Boon claimed, "While playing hide-and-seek in a drunken state, Torres went into the travel bag on his own," and "I just zipped the bag," asserting it was an accidental death.

Boon reportedly fell asleep in that state and discovered Torres inside the bag the next morning. However, Torres had already died from suffocation and showed no signs of movement. He was found to have a small physique, standing 157 cm tall and weighing 47 kg. The investigation agency charged Boon with second-degree murder, considering it intentional but not premeditated.

However, the case was overturned when evidence videos found on a cellphone surfaced. In the video, Torres, trapped inside the bag, shouted "I can't breathe" and tried to escape by pushing the bag with his hands and feet. Boon responded, "It feels the same as when you hit me and strangled my neck," and "This is the price for your cheating." The court accepted the video as evidence and rejected Boon's claims. Torres's family expressed their grief, saying, "Boon did not only kill Torres but also killed a brother, a father, and an uncle."

Despite this, Boon never admitted to the crime. She reportedly refused the prosecution's offer to reduce her sentence if she confessed to the murder. During the trial, when asked by the prosecution why she did not unzip the bag, she replied, "I was a victim of domestic violence. I hoped Torres would try to understand my feelings and become a better person." Her attorney also argued, "The defendant was abused by the victim" and "She suffered from battered woman syndrome." Boon lived in detention for 58 months after her arrest and was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment. She even smiled at her supporters who cheered for her immediately after the sentencing.
