Yangpyeong-gun is a super-aged rural area with a large area and inconvenient transportation, resulting in a relatively low walking practice rate. Accordingly, the program was planned to enable everyone to practice healthy living through walking and to create a healthier Yangpyeong both physically and mentally.
Walking is a popular physical activity that anyone can easily do anywhere. It is known to reduce the risk of adult diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke, improve sleep quality, and lower the risk of depression and dementia.
At this competition, the ‘Walking with Health Heroes’ program was highly evaluated as a new solution for a sustainable healthy living practice program that fosters healthy physical and mental health in old age while enjoying the nature of Yangpyeong. In particular, the incorporation of shuffle dance with music and dance, phyto-chemical cooking classes, the mobile walking app WalkOn challenge, and the connection with the walking self-help group KeepGoing demonstrated achievements in improving residents’ self-management abilities and potential for development.
Baem Myeong-seok, Director of the Public Health Center, said, “If the walking program that allows people to walk and communicate together in Yangpyeong’s unique beautiful nature is expanded, many residents will be able to prevent chronic diseases and recharge their health confidence.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to promote community health through various healthy living walking programs and education.”
