Dobong Residents' Emotional Shelter 'Dokkaebi Madang' Wins Prime Minister's Award at Korea Space Culture Awards

Existing upper space transformed into a resident relaxation area... Connected roof-sloped stepped plaza created

Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok), together with Seoul City, announced that the ‘Dokkaebi Madang’ created on the 2nd floor of the public parking lot at Dokkaebi Market in Banghak-dong (51 Banghak-ro 10-gil, Dobong-gu) won the ‘Prime Minister’s Award’ at the ‘2024 Korea Architecture and Culture Festival.’

The Korea Spatial Culture Award, hosted by the Korea Institute of Architects and organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is an award given to individuals, organizations, and local governments that have worked hard to respond to social demands for improving citizens’ quality of life and creating spatial culture.

This year, 15 sites nationwide participated in the competition, and six were ultimately honored with awards. The awards have been presented since 2006, making this the 19th ceremony.

Dokkaebi Madang received the Prime Minister’s Award for its high evaluation in realizing the value of space and creating a unique culture specific to that place.

In particular, it received high marks for transforming the old and inefficient upper space of the Dokkaebi Market public parking lot into a resting area for residents and creating a stepped plaza by utilizing the slope of the connecting roof.

Currently, this place has established itself as a complex cultural space where residents gather, communicate, and enjoy leisure. Previously, the district applied for the Seoul City Citizen Living Space Creation Project together with Plot Architects Office (co-CEO Kim Myung-jae), which was in charge of the space design, aiming to transform the upper space of the Dokkaebi Market public parking lot into a citizen living space. After being selected as the target site, construction began in November last year with Seoul City’s budget and was completed in April this year.

Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “Dokkaebi Madang is a case that rediscovers the value of urban space and raises the qualitative level of public spaces. Together with the ‘Banghak 2-dong Moa Center (Village Management Office),’ which opened in July this year, it plays an important role in revitalizing the area,” adding, “We will ensure that residents can live in a more convenient and pleasant environment through the efficient operation of these two spaces.”

In July this year, the district established the ‘Banghak 2-dong Moa Center (Village Management Office)’ on the 1st floor of the Dokkaebi Market public parking lot in Banghak-dong. The Moa Center is a facility that comprehensively manages the village in areas densely populated with single-family and multi-family houses. Through the Moa Center, the district provides residents with comprehensive, life-close public services such as cleaning, local patrols, and residential environment improvement.
