Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will host the '2025 New Year's Concert' by inviting the world-renowned soprano Jo Sumi to celebrate the reopening of the Nowon Culture and Arts Center.
This New Year's Concert is especially meaningful as it will be the first official performance presented to the audience in the newly renovated venue. Notably, soprano Jo Sumi, who performed at the inaugural concert when the center first opened, will take the stage again for the reopening celebration, making the first performance in the new hall even more significant.
The concert's first act will begin with a performance by the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra. In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss II's birth, the orchestra will present his representative waltzes, polkas, and operettas.
This performance will be conducted by Johannes Viltner, who will interpret Strauss's music in a way that is both traditional and modern, delivering the essence of Vienna's musical world to the audience.
In the second act, soprano Jo Sumi will collaborate with the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra. Jo Sumi will sing the waltzes "Where the Lemon Flowers Bloom," "Viennese Blood," and the operetta "Die Fledermaus" overture's piece "When I Act as an Innocent Country Girl."
The waltzes performed by Jo Sumi and the orchestra are prepared to be enjoyed by everyone from classical beginners to enthusiasts. Especially known as the "voice given by God," Jo Sumi is expected to offer the audience an emotional moment with her profound expressiveness, unique timbre, and dazzling technique.
The concert will be held on January 16, 2025, at 7:30 PM in the main hall of the Nowon Culture and Arts Center. Tickets will be available for purchase from 10 AM on December 12 through the Nowon Cultural Foundation website and Interpark. R seats are priced at 80,000 KRW, A seats at 60,000 KRW, and Nowon-gu residents receive a 20% discount.
The Nowon Culture and Arts Center, which opened in 2004, has established itself as a hub space fulfilling the cultural needs of local residents. Marking its 20th anniversary, the district has remodeled the aging interior and exterior facilities and equipment since last year, giving the center a new look. After a pilot operation period until December, it is scheduled to officially operate from January 2025.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, "With the remodeling, the acoustics, facilities, and seating convenience have been improved, providing a more comfortable and immersive viewing environment," adding, "The '2025 New Year's Concert,' which marks a new beginning for the Nowon Culture and Arts Center, will be a time to feel hopeful and happy as we start the new year."
