Two New Hollywood Releases Take 1st and 2nd Place
The Hollywood animated film 'Moana 2' surpassed 1 million viewers in its opening weekend, topping the box office.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the 2nd, over the past weekend (November 29 to December 1), 'Moana 2' (directed by Dave Derrick Jr.) attracted 1,071,072 viewers, securing the number one spot at the box office. Its revenue share was 57.6%. The film, which was released on the 27th of last month, has recorded a cumulative audience of 1,368,433.
The sequel to 'Moana' (2016), which was seen by 2.3 million viewers domestically, tells the story of Moana, who receives an unexpected call from her ancestors and embarks on a journey with the legendary hero Maui and new crew members to break the curse of a hidden ancient island to prevent the destruction of her tribe. Actors Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson provided voice acting.
In second place was 'Wicked' (directed by Jon Chu), a film adaptation of the popular musical of the same name, which attracted 334,624 viewers. Released on the 20th of last month, it has drawn a cumulative audience of 1,195,754.
Third place went to 'Hidden Face,' starring actors Song Seung-heon, Jo Yeo-jeong, and Park Ji-hyun, with 209,131 viewers; fourth was 'Gladiator 2' with 63,782 viewers; and fifth was 'Cheongseol' with 34,622 viewers. The total number of moviegoers over the weekend was 1,809,381.
The box office rankings may change when new Korean films are released. According to the real-time reservation rates on the integrated ticketing system at 9 a.m. that day, the volleyball film '1 Seung' (directed by Shin Yeon-sik), starring Song Kang-ho and Park Jung-min, set to open on the 4th, ranked first with a reservation rate of 17.5% (45,248 people). 'Firefighter' (directed by Kwak Kyung-taek), also opening on the same day, ranked second with 15.2% (39,310 people), and 'Moana 2' ranked third with 14.8% (38,320 people).
