Musk Files Injunction Request to Prevent OpenAI's Transition to For-Profit Status

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has filed an injunction request with the court to stop OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, from converting into a for-profit corporation.

Musk Files Injunction Request to Prevent OpenAI's Transition to For-Profit Status Yonhap News

According to the US CNBC broadcast, Musk and the legal team representing xAI, the AI startup he founded, submitted this injunction request to a federal court on the 29th of last month, reported on the 30th (local time).

Musk's side also requested the court to prevent OpenAI from demanding its investors not to invest in competitors, including Musk's xAI.

Musk's team has claimed that OpenAI is effectively pursuing a merger with its largest investor, Microsoft (MS), and in the process, is trying to eliminate competitors in the AI market.

An OpenAI spokesperson responded to the injunction request by stating, "Musk's fourth attempt, recycling the same baseless complaints as before, remains completely useless."

The legal disputes Musk has initiated against OpenAI this year alone are the fourth.

Earlier, Musk filed his first lawsuit against OpenAI and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at the end of February, but abruptly withdrew the lawsuit a day before the trial began in June.

In the lawsuit filed at that time, Musk claimed that Altman violated a promise to operate OpenAI as a non-profit organization and pursued profit, breaching contracts with investors and others.

Subsequently, Musk filed another lawsuit in August, again raising issues with OpenAI's for-profit activities and seeking damages, and in mid-last month, he resubmitted a complaint including MS as a defendant.

In the past, Musk participated as an investor when OpenAI was founded in 2015 but resigned from the board and disposed of all his investment shares in 2018.

Afterwards, when OpenAI launched ChatGPT last year and sparked a global craze, Musk criticized OpenAI for unfairly pursuing profit through AI technology.
