A Village in Jeongseon-gun Holds Baby's 100th Day Celebration After 25 Years
Residents Say "The Village Is Full of Energy After a Long Time"
A 100-day celebration held in a small village in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province, has become a hot topic. It is the 100-day celebration of a baby born after a long 25 years.
On the 1st, Jeongseon-gun announced that the 100-day celebration of the first son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee, who was born last August, was held the day before in Gardu Village, Jangyeol 2-ri, Bukpyeong-myeon.
In addition to family members, local residents also attended to celebrate. The residents said, “Hearing a baby’s cry after a long time seems to bring vitality to the village,” and “We hope the child will live healthily and happily in our village for a long time,” offering their blessings.
Maeng Yeonbin, head of Jangyeol 2-ri, said, “We are happy to have the opportunity to celebrate this joyous event together in a community where it is difficult to see children,” and added, “We will work harder to make this a village where children can live well.”
The Lee couple said, “We are grateful that many people have warmly celebrated and shared our joy with love and interest,” and “We will raise the child to be healthy and happy.”
The population of the Jeongseon area is currently experiencing a simultaneous decline due to natural decrease from aging, youth outflow, and a resulting decrease in the number of births.
As of the end of 2023, the population of Jeongseon-gun is 34,202. This ranks sixth from the bottom among the 18 cities and counties in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.
Since 2015, when the population was 39,425, hundreds of people have left each year, resulting in a decrease of 5,223 people by the end of last year, nine years later. The average annual population change rate is -12%.
The number of births as of the end of 2023 was 93, which is less than half compared to 190 in 2015. With single-person households reaching 53%, the total fertility rate was surveyed at 0.827.
In contrast, the elderly population has increased significantly. As of the end of 2023, the population aged 65 and over accounts for 11,250 people (32.9%). Among the total population, those aged 60 to 64 make up the largest proportion, and the average age is 53.4 years.
