Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Florida to hold talks with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, major foreign media reported on the 29th (local time).
According to reports, Prime Minister Trudeau arrived in Palm Beach, Florida, on the day. Florida is home to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, his private residence. Trudeau’s public schedule does not include this Florida visit. Both Trudeau and Trump’s sides did not respond to requests for comments regarding the talks.
This meeting is attracting public attention as it comes right after President-elect Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff bomb on products imported from both countries until Canada and Mexico strengthen crackdowns on drugs and immigrants. Canada is the world’s 4th largest oil producer and 6th largest natural gas producer, with most of its daily production of 4 million barrels exported to the United States.
For Prime Minister Trudeau, this is a pressing situation. He must respond to the tariff bomb amid years of economic recession and rising prices, which have significantly lowered the Liberal Party’s approval ratings under his leadership. Various polls indicate the ruling Liberal Party is likely to be defeated in the Canadian general election next October.
