Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is aiming to achieve two goals: revitalizing traditional markets and creating jobs for young people.

Traditional markets, which form the foundation of the low-income and everyday economy, are increasingly losing their foothold due to changes in consumption patterns and online shopping. The aging population of traditional markets is also a chronic issue. According to data from the Small Enterprise and Market Service, the average age of traditional market merchants exceeds 60. It is time for a fresh breeze of change in traditional markets.

Accordingly, the district transformed vacant stores within traditional markets into startup spaces for young entrepreneurs. Recognizing that attracting younger generations is essential to revitalizing traditional markets, they decided to fully support young merchants' startups.

On the 28th, ‘Gucheop Banchan’ opened at Junggok Jeil Traditional Market, marking the start. Gucheop Banchan, the first youth store, is a side dish shop selling fresh and diverse side dishes and meal kits. It is a new beginning as the owner of a 5-pyeong (approximately 16.5 square meters) side dish store. In particular, Gwangjin District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho personally visited to congratulate the opening, presented a plaque, and delivered messages of encouragement and support.

Yoo Seung-hyun, CEO of Gucheop Banchan, said, “In this economic downturn, it is difficult even to think about starting a business, so I am grateful to the district office for giving me this precious opportunity. As the first entrepreneur in this project, I feel worried and burdened, but the support from Mayor Kim Kyung-ho, Cooperative President Ryu Jeong-rae, and surrounding merchants gives me great strength. I will work hard to make delicious and carefully prepared side dishes and succeed as a popular side dish restaurant.”

Gwangjin District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, “This is a meaningful occasion to take a strong first step at Junggok Jeil Traditional Market, where history and tradition live and breathe. I hope the influx of young merchants will bring vitality back to the traditional market and wish them great success.” He added, “We will continue to actively support both existing and young merchants so that they can coexist and develop together.”

Meanwhile, the district will support the full deposit and half of the monthly rent for youth stores for the next two years.
