Fuel Cell Power Facility to Supply Electricity to Approximately 18,000 Households... Completion Scheduled for May 2026
Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 29th that on the 28th, it signed a business agreement with the resident representatives of Gobong-dong 5th district, Seoul City Gas Co., Ltd., and Goyang Green Energy Co., Ltd. for the installation of the Goyang Seolmun fuel cell power generation facility and the supply of city gas to the surrounding area.

This agreement was made to realize the shared goal of advancing as an eco-friendly renewable energy leading city and improving the energy welfare of residents.
The Goyang Seolmun fuel cell power generation facility is a representative eco-friendly power generation facility that generates electricity and heat by reacting hydrogen and oxygen, with a generation capacity of 9.9 MW. This capacity is enough to supply electricity to approximately 18,000 households.
Since the hydrogen used as the fuel for power generation is extracted from city gas, about 100 households in the Gobong-dong 5th district are expected to benefit from the installation of the city gas pipeline network.
Goyang Special City increased resident acceptance from the early stages of the project through dialogue with nearby residents and tours of the power generation facility. It was finally selected in the hydrogen power generation bidding market of the Korea Power Exchange and received the power generation business permit from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, signing a power trading contract in November.
Once various permits and approvals are completed, construction of the power generation facility is scheduled to begin in June 2025, with completion in May 2026, followed by the start of commercial operation.
At the signing ceremony, the resident representative of Gobong-dong 5th district expressed happiness that city gas, a long-standing wish of the village, would be supplied, and presented a plaque of appreciation to Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City said, “Through today’s agreement, Goyang Special City has taken the first step toward becoming a leading city in eco-friendly hydrogen energy,” adding, “We will continue to expand policies to create a hydrogen economy ecosystem, including support for hydrogen vehicle purchases, hydrogen charging stations, hydrogen production facilities, and hydrogen fuel cell power generation.”
