Completion Scheduled for First Half of Next Year... Anticipated Local Landmark
'Urban Oasis' Spanning 148,753㎡
Iksan City in Jeonbuk is accelerating the creation of 'Sora Park' following the private special projects of Madong, Sudosan, and Moin Parks, making swift progress in expanding urban green spaces.
On the 28th, Iksan City announced that the construction of 'Sora Park' is progressing smoothly with the goal of completion in the first half of next year.
Sora Park was designated as an urban planning facility in 1967, but its development was delayed for 50 years, remaining a long-standing wish of local residents. In response to the long-standing requests from residents of Namjung-dong, Sindong, and Yeongdeung-dong, the city decided to promote the creation of Sora Park by utilizing the Special Act on Private Rental Housing.
In 2017, Iksan City and the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) agreed to create a park on more than 70% of the district and donate it, while developing residential land on less than 30% of the site. After obtaining district plan approval in 2020 and completing about two years of compensation processes, full-scale park construction began in early 2022.
Approximately 55 billion KRW will be invested in the creation of Sora Park. By utilizing LH’s finances, the local government’s financial burden is reduced while providing a large-scale green space to citizens.
This project aims to preserve existing green spaces while adding walking trails and convenience facilities, creating a nature-friendly resting place. It also targets balanced development by supplying residential spaces in damaged areas.
LH is designing Sora Park under the theme of 'Water Stand Park,' symbolizing the park’s revival through water, hills, and trees. Major facilities include a suspension bridge hill forest, Silbeot Square, Field Landscape Square, and a small library.
Mayor Jeong Heon-yul said, "Once Sora Park is completed, the downtown area of Iksan will embrace another large-scale garden following Madong, Sudosan, and Moin Parks. It will provide citizens with spaces to enjoy nature and leisure and is expected to become a local landmark."
Meanwhile, the development of residential apartments on the Sora Park site is also progressing without delay. Moa Construction plans to proceed with apartment sales after obtaining permits in the first half of next year. Rental apartments were re-tendered last October, and a business operator is expected to be selected in the first half of next year.
