Joint Academic Conference on Prevention and Measures Against Illegal Fishing Vessels from China to Be Held in Seoul

Korean Society of Maritime Police, National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, and Gunsan University Joint Event... 29th at National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives Dokdo Hall

A joint academic conference on the theme of ‘Prevention and Countermeasures for Illegal Fishing Vessels from China’ will be held on the 29th at the Dokdo Hall of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives in Seoul.


Co-hosted by the Korean Society of Maritime Police Studies, the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, and the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Kunsan National University, this event was organized to share and disseminate research results related to countermeasures and prevention of illegal fishing Chinese vessels within Korea’s exclusive economic zone.


On the day, representatives from universities, research institutes, and the maritime police will gather to present and discuss active jurisdictional application regarding illegal fishing Chinese vessels across four topics.


Under the chairmanship of Professor No Ho-rae (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Kunsan National University, Professor Go Myung-seok (Department of Marine Production System Management) from Pukyong National University will present ‘A Study on Various Legal Issues of Illegal Chinese Fishing Vessels,’ followed by discussions led by Professor Lee Byung-kyu (Attorney, Department of Law) from Myongji University and Dr. Park Jun-mo from the Fisheries Economics Research Institute of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives.


Under the chairmanship of Professor Kim Eun-gi (Department of Police Law) from Paichai University, Professor Jeong Cho-young (Department of Public Human Resources in Marine Fisheries) from Kunsan National University will present ‘A Basic Study on the Development of Virtual Training Scenarios for Crackdown on Illegal Foreign Fishing Vessels,’ followed by discussions with Attorney Lee Kwang-hoo (Woo-myeon Law Firm) and Superintendent Ha Tae-young from the Korea Maritime Police Academy.


Under the chairmanship of Professor Lim Yoo-seok (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Kunsan National University, Professor Lim Chae-hyun (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Mokpo National Maritime University will present ‘A Legal Review for Strengthening Jurisdiction over Crackdown on Illegal Chinese Fishing Vessels,’ followed by discussions with Attorney Park Sung-won (Taepyungyang Law Firm) and Superintendent Jeong Young-jin from the West Sea Regional Maritime Police Agency.


Under the chairmanship of Professor Lim Seok-won (Department of Marine Production System Management) from Pukyong National University, Professor Kim Do-hoon (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Hanseo University will present ‘A Study on Crackdown Measures Using SAR & AI-Based Technologies for Illegal Fishing,’ followed by discussions with Professor Son Young-tae (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Kunsan National University and Professor Kim Kyung-dong (Department of Police Studies) from U1 University.


Lim Seok-won, president of the Korean Society of Maritime Police Studies and professor at Pukyong National University’s Department of Marine Production System Management, said, “The active application of jurisdiction over illegal fishing vessels is not only a way to secure maritime security but also to protect Korea’s valuable fishery resources.” He added, “Through this joint academic conference, we hope that not only Korea’s legislative jurisdiction but also enforcement jurisdiction will be actively applied to Chinese fishing vessels illegally operating in Korea’s exclusive economic zone.”
